Changes in urine color

http://dr-razavi.blogspot.com/2008/01/changes-in-urine-color.html

The normal color of urine ranges from light yellow to dark amber, depending on the concentration of solutes in the urine. The more dehydrated that the body is the darker yellow the color of the urine may look. Urochrome is the name of the pigment that gives urine its characteristic yellow color. Other urinary complaints may accompany changes in urine color. Such symptoms include urinary urgency (having to hurry to get to the bathroom), frequent urination, burning pain with urination (indicative of infection), or colicky pains (suggesting kidney stones).

Pink or red urine should prompt an immediate visit to your doctor. The first test is a dipstick for blood. A positive dipstick for blood implies the presence of red cells, free hemoglobin (from broken down red blood cells), or myoglobin (from broken down muscle cells).

Red blood cells in the urine may be from kidney loss (termed "glomerular" blood cells) in patients with renal disease. Red cells in the urine of these individuals will usually be misshapen and accompanied by protein in the urine. Normal appearing red blood cells (termed "epithelial" red blood cells to identify them as cells coming from the lining of the urinary tract instead of the kidney) may be present during a urinary tract infection, urinary stone, or urinary malignancy. Red blood cells are common in the urine after urologic procedures and occasionally following catheter placement. Complete urine testing (called "urinalysis") for the presence of bacteria and white blood cells, urine culture, cystoscopy, CT scan, and/or other imaging studies may be necessary to clarify the source of the blood.

If the urine is red and acid but does not contain hemoglobin, myoglobin, or red blood cells, suspect an indicator dye such as phenolphthalein (the laxative in ExLax) in which case the red should disappear when the urine is alkalinized with a few drops of potassium hydroxide. Blackberries and beets can turn acid urine red due to the presence of anthrocyanin, while rhubarb, anthraquinone laxatives, and some diagnostic dyes will redden urine only when it is alkaline. The anesthetic, propofol, has been reported to cause pink coloration of the urine, particularly in alcoholics. Other medications that can cause red urine are the phenytoin, phenothiazines, e.g., Compazine. Red urine can also be caused by chronic lead and mercury poisoning.

Orange urine may be produced by phenazopyridine (Pyridium) or ethoxazene (Serenium), both of which are used as urinary tract anesthetics to diminish urinary discomfort. Rifampin, phenacetin, sulfasalazine, Vitamin C, riboflavin, and carrots will also turn urine dark yellow to orange. An opaque orange-pink urine color can result from abundant uric acid crystals which can be seen in acidic urine of patients who have undergone intestinal by-pass surgery or are receiving chemotherapy for malignancy.

Blue or green urine may be caused by a blue dye such as methylene blue, a component in several medications (Trac Tabs, Urised, Uroblue) used to reduce symptoms of bladder inflammation or irritation. Administration of the dye, indigo carmine, turns the urine green and can last for several days if renal function is poor. While more often reported to cause pink urine, the anesthetic, propofol, has also been reported to cause green coloration of the urine. Amitriptyline, indomethacin, resorcinol, triamterine, cimetidine, phenergan, and several multivitamins also lend a blue-green tint to the urine. An inherited form of high calcium (called "familial hypercalcemia") can result in blue urine, which has lent this disease the nickname "blue diaper syndrome". Another metabolic disorder, indicanuria, can cause blue urine due to tryptophan indole metabolites. A blue pigment may also be produced by infection with the bacteria Pseudomonas . Dark green pigmentation, especially if associated with air (known as "pneumaturia"), urinary tract infection, and/or solid particles in the urine, can be caused by bile when there is a fistula between the urinary tract and the intestines.

Brown or black urine (not due to myoglobin or bilirubin) may be caused by excessive L-dopa or melanin excretion as well as copper or phenol poisoning. Ingestion of large amounts of rhubarb, fava beans, or aloe can cause dark brownish black urine. Metabolites of the antihypertensive medication methyldopa (Aldomet) may turn black on contact with bleach (which is often present in toilet bowls) . Other medications causing brown or brown-black urine are chloraquine and primaquine, furazolidone, metronidazole, nitrofurantoin, cascara/senna laxatives, methocarbamol, and sorbitol. Contamination with povidone-iodine (Betadine) solution or douche can turn urine brown. Melanin and melanogen, found in the urine of patients with melanoma, will darken standing urine from the air-exposed surface downward. Alcaptonia, a rare hereditary disease, will turn the urine dark after being exposed to the air over a period of time due to the presence of homogentisic acid. Urinary hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid excretion due the metabolic disorder tyrosinosis will also cause urine to be brown-black in color. In porphyria cutanea tarda, the urine will appear reddish brown in natural light but fluoresces pink under ultraviolet light.

White or cloudy urine is most commonly a result of phosphaturia. This is a benign condition in which excess phosphate crystals form in urine. Adding a drop of acetic acid to the urine sample will result in immediate clearing of the urine. Phosphaturia is usually intermittent, occurring following a meal or after ingesting a large quantity of milk. White urine is sometimes due to pyuria (abundant white blood cells) in association with an infection of the urinary tract. White cloudy urine can rarely be due to chyluria (lymph fluid), resulting from a communication between the lymphatic system and the urinary tract.

Kidney support for Mom

After doing alot of research today, I am a bit confused. Most of mom's pain symptoms remind me of a kidney stone problem, while other, more chronic condition (weight loss, nausea, loss of appetite, distaste for liquids) remind me of a kidney failure.

It is clear to me that her inability to eat and drink are caused, at least in part, by the kidneys overload, and a possible shutdown. So, for any kind of therapy to be effective in the future, we will have to deal with the kidney problem before anything else can be done.

Since she cannot drink much, I have few choices for trying to rebuild her kidney function. Those are: enemas, oil massages, foot baths, and herb infusion baths.

So, let's start accumulating research about that.

One thing I am looking at are the formulas currently available through whole foods, and trying to replicate some of the ingredients.

Kidney Activator Your Kidney’s Best Friend.
Benefits:
• Encourages proper water balance in body tissues.
• Supports body mechanisms designed to prevent (not cure) stone formation.
• Soothes kidneys and bladder.
• Kidney strengthening.
• Eliminates occasional water retention.
• Supports bladder and kidney health.

Juniper berries promote proper kidney function and flow of digestive fluids. They support the urinary system (especially the kidneys) helping the body's efforts to maintain proper fluid balance.
An aromatic compound, it is antiseptic. Berries contain resin, tannins, vitamin C, B vitamins, phosphorus, sodium, selenium and zinc. .
Parsley herb is similar to juniper berry, but milder. It contains magnesium to help control calcium that may settle in the kidneys. Parsley supports the functions of the kidneys and bladder and aids overall urinary health.
Uva Ursi is a famous herb used for generations for kidney health.
Dandelion root encourages normal kidney function and contains many minerals important to the urinary tract.
Chamomile contains volatile oils to encourage cleansing action in the kidneys. It is also very soothing to body tissues, especially the nervous system.
This combination is an herbal source of iron, manganese, potassium, sodium, vitamin A and riboflavin.

Amount Per 2 Capsules: Proprietary blend 830 mg*: Juniper Berries (Juniperus communis), Parsley Herb (Petroselinum crispum), Uva Ursi Leaves (Arctostaphylos uva ursi), Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale), Chamomile Flowers (Matricaria recutita).

Chamomile is used in bath herbs and in face lotions to firm the tissues, keep the skin young looking, brighten the eyes and relieve weariness. A decoction of this plant is used for hysterical or nervous afflictions. If drunk before bed it will help you fall asleep. It is also excellent for dissolving kidney stones, and with sugar its good for the spleen.

A simple way to make chamomile oil, according to the Egyptians, is to take fresh flowers (1 Ounce) and beat them with pure olive oil. Steep the flowers in the oil for 24 hours or more, until their virtues have been extracted. Then strain. This can be used to rub over the body of a person afflicted with ague or rheumatism or for massaging overstrained or cramped muscles. Chamomile grown in the garden helps keep away harmful insects, but must be weeded by hand as it is easily strangled.

If you make a Tea from it be sure the container is covered while steeping or part of the properties of the plant will be lost ( the essential oils ).

"What's in an efficient kidney stone treatment?"

To successfully break and pass kidney stones you need to follow a complete natural treatment. This involves herbs with different properties to help your body pass the stones.
  1. First you need herbs which relax and dilate the organs in order to help the stones and sand pass more easily.
  2. Afterwards you have to break or dissolve the stones. These herbs contain vitamin C, potassium, magnesium and B-complex vitamins which react with calcium or dissolve calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate stones.
  3. Third, the small stones and sand must be flushed with lots of water and plants with diuretic and aquaretic properties.
  4. Passing kidney stones cause burns and colic. There are herbs that can relieve the inflammation and soothe the burns and cramps.

Herbal remedies for kidney stones to relax and dilate the urethra

Drink 3 cups of Shepherd's Purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) tea per day, half hour before main meals, or two hours after. You can also drink Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) tea, the same as above.

Herbal remedies for fragmenting kidney stones

* Calcium phosphate stones can be dissolved and prevented by ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
Fresh parsley is a great source of vitamin C, vitamin B-6, magnesium and potassium. In fact it contains more vitamin C than lemons or oranges.
Take 1 handful of parsley and boil in 4 cups of water for 10 minutes. Strain and store it in a bottle in the refrigerator. Drink half a cup of this infusion once a day.
* Magnesium ammonium phosphate stones (Struvite stones) caused by urinary tract infections are also dissolved by acidic urine. Both the infection and the stone are easily cured with vitamin C in large doses.
* The most common calcium oxalate stone does not form if you take adequate quantities of B-complex vitamins and magnesium. B-1 (thiamine) and B-6 deficiency have been associated with stones.
Red Clover blossoms are quite high in calcium and magnesium. Take sitz baths with Yarrow and Red Clover blossoms.
Dandelion is also rich in magnesium and iron. Make a tea from 2 teaspoons of dried leaves and roots in 1 cup of water. Boil for 5 minutes and let steep for 15 minutes.
* Uric acid (urate) stones result from a problem metabolizing purines. They may form in a condition such as gout.
Birch leaves (Folium Betulae) tea has anti-inflammatory properties and is a very good antihilitic (prevents the formation of calculi). It acts as a urinary tract antiseptic and is a strong diuretic and depurative (especially helpful in eliminating uric acid).
Birch leaves tea dissolves and helps the passage mostly of urate stones and less of calcium oxalate or phosphate ones.
Make an infusion from 1 teaspoon of leaves in 1 cup of water. Drink 2-3 cups a day.

Herbal remedies for kidney stones with diuretic or aquaretic properties

Cherry tails and corn silk are probably the most used herbal diuretics for passing kidney stones. You will like the taste of cherry tails. I cannot say the same thing about corn silk tea (yuck). Yet, Paula's uncle is using it for treating his gout. Apparently few people can stand the taste, despite its numerous benefits in treating kidney stones and gout. You can even mix the two teas.
Cherry tails and corn silk contain flavonoids, saponins and potassium salts. Use them for dissolving urate kidney stones (uric acid).
In case of small kidney stones, drink 2-3 cups of corn silk tea per day, 3 hours apart (1 teaspoon of corn silk in 1 cup of boiled water).
If you have renal colic, you can make a stronger decoction and drink it throughout the day. Put 30 g of corn silk in 1 liter water and simmer for 2 hours.
To soothe the colic you should drink a tea with anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and sedative properties. Drink Castor oil or make a tea from Cowslip (Primula officinalis), Chamomile, Linden or Peppermint.
Common Horsetail (Herba Equiseti) is another powerful diuretic and depurative herb.
It has low-medium antiseptic properties, but its action is greatly amplified if used together with Juniper or pine resin tincture. If you cannot stand Juniper (it is quite irritant) you can use pine resin instead.
For sand, small kidney stones and gallstones take 20 minutes hot sitz baths with horsetail. The water must reach above the kidney region. After you get out, put on a bath robe and don't dry yourself. Stay in bed for 1 hour perspiring.
While in bed, drink a warm horsetail tea with small sips. Hold the urine in the bladder and finally clear it with pressure. The stones are often removed this way.
Here is a recipe for Horsetail sitz bath from Maria Treben: take 100 g / 3.5 oz of Horsetail and steep it overnight in cold water overnight. Boil the water the next day and add it to the bath water.
Horsetail tea: 1 heaped teaspoon of Horsetail in 1 cup of boiling water.
Another alternative is to drink a Horsetail decoction. Boil 4-5 teaspoons of herb in 1.5 liters / 50 oz water for 5 minutes and drink throughout the day

Magnesium regulates hepatic and renal functions. Massaging the reflex zones of the adrenal glands - kidneys, lymphatic points. Parsley tea and apple cider vinegar (1 teaspoon vinegar and 1/2 glass of water) helps the good functioning of the kidneys. Wear warm shoes and adopt a diet free of meat and spices.

Hay flower therapy

In kidney disease, cystitis, rheumatism, colds and flu (early stages) is recommended hay flower bath. In the bathroom put a complete extract of hay flowers. Other recommended reno-urinary disease treatment are concentrated infusions of horsetail (especially in case of cystitis, rhinitis, kidney failure), sulfma (in renal colic, acute cystitis, helps remove gallstones by dilating channels).

Treatment for kidney stones

For kidney stones, drink herbal oat. Oats boil for 1/2 h. Drink 2 cups daily. Tea for a kidney cure: cranberry, horsetail and nettles. It's good for the cranberry to make a separately steep. You should consume: vegetable juice, bran, bran bread baked in the sun, raw potatoes, onion, horseradish, garlic, olive oil, vegetables in general. Avoid sugar. To eliminate toxins, the main culprit of kidney infection, it is recommended wheat bran soak in water (2 tablespoons bran/250 ml water) from evening until morning, then drink when the composition is a little warm. In the evening eat yogurt with bran. Do not drink tap water because it may contain bacteria.

Do not sweeten the tea, not even honey! This tea could be given 5-6 times a day, it cleans your kidneys out of any infections and the legumes from the flax seeds help with healing kidney damage. I personally cured my daughters right kidney when she was 7 years old with this simple remedy!"

12/05/2010: Brooke from Montgomery, Tx, Usa replies: "Ken,
I have never had a problem with my kidneys, so I am hopefully thinking this is due to my using the Castor Oil packs! However, I use to treat a woman in Houston and she was going to dialysis, I did a few different treatments on her, and one of them was Castor Oil packs. Her numbers were dramatically decreased. I had her change her diet, use the Castor oil packs and I did Body Alignment Technique. Her numbers decreased by the third time."

[YEA]  02/01/2009: Cheryl from Bakersfield, California writes: "Kidney help
Years ago, in 1998 my son was sent home from the hospital, on a friday, after one week, with a very swollen abdomen and swelling in his ankles. He has had a disease called Nephrotic Syndrome since he was fifteen, and he was then twenty-four. At that time he had been hospitalized over forty times for this awful disease. This hospital that had had him for a patient for nearly ten years, lost his medical file! So my son told this new doctor that when he is in a swollen state that Lasix in pill form will not make him urinate. He told him that the only treatment that would get the fluid off of him at that point was lasix given intraveinously. Well, the doctor refused and kept on trying to give him pills. When I told the patient advocate about the problem the doctor sent my son home the next day with about two gallons of excess water still inside him. He was unable to urinate more than an inch of urine that contained blood and pus. Well, I made him a bed on my couch and tried to make him as comfortable as I could. I knew that it would be nearly impossible to find a kidney specialist
on the week-end. So I went in my bedroom and closed the door and laid across my bed and cried and cried. And then I remembered something I had read in a little book titled: '10 Top Herbs to cure big diseases' It said that cayenne pepper unblocks any blockage! So I thought to myself it is worth a try. I looked in my kitchen cabinet and I had it in my spices. I thought I would put some in soup, and then I told myself 'No' because that is just more liquid in him he doesn't need right now. So I dumped out some big capsules and filled up four or five of them. I gave them to my son and within a four hour period he urinated three long times! After that his pills kicked in and began working! He remained in remission for about eight years but it always flares up when he gets a cold or flu, or under to much stress.

I hope this helps."

07/02/2008: Tan Koon Peng from Singapore writes: "Wonderful Corn Silk For Kidney Problems:
Corn silk has been used to treat various urinary disorders and is a diuretic.
It is effective in treating acute and chronic inflammation of the urinary system.
In Chinese medicine it is used as a treatment for water retention.

A sweet, soothing and cooling herb with diuretic properties, stimulates bile, helps prostatitis, enuresis in children, prevents the formation of stones in the kidneys, clears bladder and urinary tract infection, and lowers blood sugar levels.

Corn silk tea has a soothing effect on kidney, bladder and urinary problems, and can clear up pus, infection, burning or scalding urine. It will also soothe inflammation of the urinary passages due to gravel or kidney stones, and regulate the flow of urine (whether too much or too little), in cases of bladder drip and incontinence -inability of the bladder to hold urine-and urine retention or stoppage of urine. It seems to heal diseased areas of the kidneys, bladder and urinary passages and flush out uric acid, toxins and other poisons.

I have complete compassion for your husband's suffering as I also have kidney problems myself, and the pain he's suffering is horrendous!!! Anyway, if your going to pick the wild dandelion's yourself, what you need to do is, remove the leaves from the plant, and leave them to dry out naturally. Once they turn brown, and crunchie, scrunch them up and put a heaped teaspoon per cup to brew for 1 minuet. Then drink Do this 4-6 times daily. Also, put 3 drips of vinegar in the water {any vinegar will do} while you soak them, before draining and drying them, use only pure water if possible, or buy a distillation unit{I use a waterman 400 myself)

07/11/2010: Calvin from Bangalore, Karnataka, India replies: "Dear Gaurab

Kidney failure is a great challenge to doctors practising various forms of medicine, more so if the patient has diabetes. I practice natural remedies. I have discovered that the best and safest method of dealing with chronic kidney failure is to drink fresh juice of radish leaves twice a day. The leaves should be put in a blender and ground to pulp before squeezing out the juice. No water, salt or sugar should be added. Start with about 50 ml in the morning and evening 40 minutes before your meals and gradually increase the quantity as the days go by and your body gets used to it. There is no fear in using this wonderful herb. It is the best for any kidney problem. When you do not get the leaves, use the root till the leaves appear in the market. You will find yourself feeling much better as you continue using the juice of radish leaves. To decrease the pressure on your kidneys, you can also detoxify yourself by consuming 2-3 tablets of Activated Charcoal twice a week. Do this for a month and give your feedback."

10/31/2010: Delia from Asheville, Nc replies: "For those people with high creatinine levels and kidney failure: A doctor that I once knew, who is no longer practicing, spoke at a conference of doctors regarding a method for restoring failing kidneys. In his case, the first patient that he experimented with, had a creatinine level of 40. After three days in a row of subcutaneous bee venom injections, ( not necessarily on the skin above kidney, just as long as it gets into blood stream), the patients creatinine level was 2-3. His kidneys were completely restored. I don't think it would be difficult to research and find a doctor who practices apitherapy - some may not know about the benefits of it and kidney failure, as it is used mainly for arthritis. I have heard, although, I don't know it to be true, that there have been no cases of any beekeepers ever having arthritis. I would think that if one couldn't find a doctor to administer the bee venom, (I believe a physician can purchase it from Apothecure) then one could try using bee stings (check for allergies!! ) as an alternative. Might take a lot of bee stings, but failing kidneys are serious."

05/29/2009: GTCharlie from Los Angeles, CA replies: "Dear Priyia, I would recommend Fresh Potato Juice treatment!

herbal infusion baths - kidney problems

http://www.healingcancerandsickness.com/articles/2/using-herbs-daily-for-optimal-health-benefits.html

For healing, health and pleasure, the most beneficial ways of using herbs is to take them internally. However, the body is able to absorb through the skin and this method can be used with good results. An infusion of herbs, when used as a topical application, foot infusion or a full bath can be a fantastic way of assisting healing. Research has found that a bath prepared for a herbal infusion for cleansing the kidneys will reach the kidneys within 10 minutes of stepping into the bath. The warm water opens the pores of the skin and the pores then readily take in the properties from the herbs. Any herb that may be taken internally can be used in a bath.

HERBAL BATHS. They are used for pleasure and for treatment and illness. A full, herbal bath is prepared by placing fresh or dried herbs (about 6 teaspoons) in a muslin or cloth bag and tied closed. The bag is held under running hot water to release the oils and healing properties into the water. Adjust the water to the temperature that they body can stand and soak for 10-20 minutes. Use the cloth bag of herbs to cleanse the skin. If you add 1-2 handfuls of Epsom salts it will help the body eliminate toxins through the pores.

FOOTBATHS. These are made in a bowl large enough to rest your feet up to the ankle in water. Even though only the feet are being soaked, the herbs can assist many other parts of the body, such as chest congestion, sore throat, or kidney and bladder infections. For chronically cold feet, a 15-minute hot footbath of peppermint, ginger, or cayenne will stimulate circulation. To make a footbath, you normally use 2-3 teaspoons of dried herbs, adding boiling water over them. Then add cold water to take the temperature to what your feet can stand.

Deficiencies in the level of essential nutrients in the body can aggravate the disorders of the kidneys. It is important to minimize or avoid diuretics in any form, as the nutrient lost through the urine is immense and can bring about all sorts of problems for the kidneys. The ideal role that supplements play in the body is to restore these nutrients especially if they have undergone significant depletion in the body. The restoration and renewal of damaged tissue, and the maintenance of a healthy mucous membrane in the body is an important function that the vitamin A can perform as a supplement. A supplement using the vitamin C acts as a mild diuretic and can help in the stabilization of the walls of blood vessels. Infections in the body are another area that this vitamin can work in, especially used with the plant-based substances called the bioflavonoid, for maximum effect. Bleeding in the urinary tract is also alleviated using a combination of these two substances. Urinary output and volume can also be increased by supplements of the vitamin E, especially with regard to the development of scarring and scar tissue in the body, which might disturb the normal functioning of the kidneys, this vitamin also speeds up the healing process. The vitamin B6 can be used in cases of uremia, which is a physical condition or disorder in which insufficient amounts of urea are excreted through the urine, the vitamin can increase the volume of urea excreted and prevent its dangerous accumulation in the body. To retain a normal complement of the B vitamins in the body, supplements using capsules of multivitamin content such as the vitamin B complex can be utilized.
The stimulation of the urinary tract to excrete sufficient volumes of water should be the aim of the therapy utilizing herbs or herbal-based products.
The juice of the horsetail herb is a very efficient treatment option and can be drunk daily. To prepare this juice take 1 to 2 tbsp. of the herb or some of the herbal extract and dilute it in a glass of water, this can be drunk thrice a day before your meals, using boiling water; a herbal tea can also be brewed from the herb by simply adding a tsp. of herbs to a cup of the boiling water, dosage is as before with the juice. The probability of full and complete recovery form the disorder is increased if the treatment using the herb is begun at once and without delay.
Kidney function can also be strengthened using the juice of the birch; the juice has many minerals essential to health besides other beneficial effects. This birch juice can be made into a tea and can be drunk throughout the course of a day, in small cups as a treatment method. The juice acts on the kidneys reducing the albumen content of the urine to an appreciable extent, increasing the volume and output of urine while gently soothing any existing inflammation that may have developed in them. The beneficial actions and properties of the juices of the horsetail and birch are supported in their effects by the tea made from the leaf of the bearberry, and this tea can be used to dilute those juices instead of water during treatment. The inflammation that may develop can also be minimized using herbs like the Echinacea family, the goldenrod herb, the roots of the ginger plant, the dandelion, the husks of beans and fennel, the catnip plant and alfalfa grass may also be used in this role. As an additional benefit these herbs also stimulate the kidneys, helping it carry its normal functions out. A combination of these herbs can be used to make an herbal tea by adding a tsp. of the herbs to a cup of boiling water, this tea may be drunk twice a day, for optimal and beneficial effects on the kidneys.

One may also resort to external and topical methods, by alternately using an oil compress made from the oil of flax seed with a compress made of hot hayseeds. For topical application, warm some of the flax seed oil in a pan, and soak a cotton cloth into this warmed oil. Apply gently to the painful area covering the application with a dry cotton towel at first and replacing it with a woolen cloth later on.
Bathing daily for about twenty minutes using hot horsetail herbal extract in the bath water or an oat straw sitz solution will appreciably relieve pain in the afflicted person, and boost the rate of recuperation. The bath can be made by steeping 3 and a half pounds of dried horsetail herbs in five qt. of cold water for about twelve hours. The herbs diffuses into the water, and this liquid can then be strained and warmed, and mixed in the bath water of the patient. Make sure to lie down in the bath water for at least twenty minutes for optimal effects. After having taken this immersion in the herbal infused water, the body must not be dried immediately, the patient can wear a warm cotton-terry robe and must be allowed to sweat for at least an hours time, while lying in bed.

Now, whether you have a kidney infection or kidney stones, one of the best home remedies you can and should try first is to drink plenty of fluids. If your kidney stones are not large enough to be blocking the passage of urine, then forcing your body to create extra urine can help move the kidney stone out of your system.

If you have a kidney infection, drinking extra fluids can help flush the germs and bacteria out of your system faster.

If the kidney stone is large enough to create a lot of pain, it is most likely too large to go through your ureter tubes easily. One of the best known home remedies for this though, will help relieve the pain of the stone plus help it to break up and dissolve so that it can be passed easily.

This remedy is just simple lemon juice. Not lemon flavored drinks though, real lemon juice is what's needed. Drink at least two ounces, and the kidney stone pain is usually gone within 15-20 minutes. The stone itself often dissolves within about 12-15 hours too.

Some people mix the two ounces of lemon juice with two ounces of virgin olive oil. This can make you feel sick to your stomach, but many people swear by this remedy. Usually the lemon juice alone will do the trick though.

Other people use a coca cola home remedy. The acid in this drink is said to dissolve kidney stones too, and some people have had success by simply drinking a lot at once. It's not the healthiest approach of course, but it has been reported to work well for breaking up kidney stones.

Natural Remedies

You've probably heard this too many times to count, but it can't be stressed enough where kidney problems are concerned. You must increase the amount of water you drink. If you have a kidney infection or kidney stones, increasing the amount of water you drink can help flush the problem out of your body.

With a kidney infection, germs and bacteria take up residence within your kidney and multiple. Drinking extra water helps your kidneys be able to flush those germs and bacteria out of your body, taking the infection along with it.

Kidney stones are accumulations of waste materials from your body. Often these are created by calcium, but sometimes they can be created by too much protein or because you've had chronic urinary infections. These deposits can be kept from forming though, by keeping them diluted with extra water.

Now you don't have to technically drink water all day, but that is the best option. Drink at least a half gallon of plain water each day if at all possible. You can add real lemon juice to the water though, and this will give you flavor as well as provide your body with a way to help keep kidney stones from forming, because lemon juice dissolves kidney stones. Lemon juice is also a natural antiseptic, which means it can help prevent bacteria from multiplying into an infection within your kidneys.

You can also drink teas and juices if you'd like, because these are sources of liquid and liquid is the primary thing your body needs to keep your kidneys healthy. Try to avoid drinks with excess sugars though, because this can create a whole host of additional health problems which will eventually lead to creating kidney problems too.

If you drink caffeinated tea or coffee, you'll need to drink extra water. Caffeine can dehydrate your body, and if you're dehydrated you'll be more prone to developing kidney stones.

Since about 80% of kidney stones are made up of calcium oxalate, some people avoid foods high in oxalate as a natural way to avoid chronic kidney stones and infections. Foods high in oxalate include different types of berries such as blueberries and strawberries, instant coffee, chocolate, and dark leafy green vegetables.

It used to be believed that avoiding calcium rich foods would also help reduce chronic kidney stone problems, but that belief is starting to change. Some evidence now suggests that calcium rich foods can actually help prevent the development of kidney stones, but excess Vitamin D or Calcium supplements might cause problems because they're not absorbed well by your body.

Kidney stone signs and symptoms

So what are the warning signs and symptoms of a kidney stone attack? It's difficult to be specific, because you may experience any combination of some general symptoms. Some kidney stone sufferers may feel a dull, non-descript pain in their lower back for days, while others are suddenly crippled by extremely sharp pains. These symptoms and warning signs are intended to be a general layman's guide to self-diagnosing a possible kidney stone attack, not a substitute for proper medical attention. If you feel pains that are unrelenting and strong, seek a doctor's care as soon as possible. Don't wait until the actual attack begins- a simple in-office urine test can usually diagnose a kidney stone condition long before the actual attack.

Here are the most common symptoms and warning signs of a kidney stone attack:
1. Medical history and gender. Although women are just as likely to develop kidney problems, the majority of kidney stone sufferers are men. Some researchers believe that a family history of kidney problems can significantly increase your own chances of developing kidney stones. Check out any known family medical history that indicates a predisposition to kidney stones. Forewarned can be forearmed. If you know that kidney stone attacks run in the family, make sure you use good preventive measures, such as increasing your non-sugared, non-caffeine fluid intake and avoiding excessive dairy consumption, especially at night. Never intentionally work your body into a state of severe dehydration, which may occur if you work long hours at a physically demanding job or spend too much time in the heat. Always take plenty of water breaks when working excessive hours. Those who are prone to kidney stone attacks should never be far from two things- a good water supply and a bathroom. Withholding urination for an extended amount of time will work against you in the long run.

2. Dull, 'toothachy' pain originating in the lower back or pelvis. This may be your first indication that something serious is developing.
The level of pain may be continuous, or it may come and go in waves. It will rarely disappear entirely. You may take an analgesic tablet or two, expecting the pain to dissipate. After a few hours or even days, the pain will most likely increase in degree and be more definite in its location. Some victims feel a definite tension in the kidney area, as if their urine was trying to get past a blockage. You may even feel a 'squirting' sensation internally, as fluids try to get past the blockage. Even if the pain is tolerable, it should never be left unchecked.

3. Fever, disorientation, general 'blahs'. Along with this dull pain in the lower back, many victims experience a general sense of disorientation and fatigue. You may feel feverish or chilled. Your thought process may become cloudier, and your energy level dramatically lower. An actual fever may or may not be present, but you still experience the same nausea and grogginess you might associate with a serious cold or stomach bug. Walking becomes more and more difficult, and the pain makes everyday tasks nearly impossible. You may experience trouble reaching above your head, or recovering from a bent position.

4. Signs of blood in the urine. If you can, observe any urine you secrete during this time of distress. You may be able to see actual blood traces in the urine, or the urine itself may be an unusual color.
If your urine is a deep orange color, you are most likely dehydrated. Any blood in the urine is cause for alarm. In combination, a dark-colored urine associated with sharp pains in the kidney region should be a red flag for you to seek help immediately. For less severe symptoms, you should dramatically increase your intake of water and/or cranberry juice. Make an appointment to see a doctor if this does not alleviate minor symptoms and you still notice unusual urine secretions.

5. Sharp, stabbing pains concentrated on one side of the lower back. If you start feeling sudden and severe pains that feel as if your abdomen was being cut open from the inside, you are most likely in the throws of a full-blown kidney stone attack. If your pain level beforehand was hovering around a 5 or 6, you'll probably jump to a 9 or 10 in a hurry. You'll want, no, demand immediate medical attention at this point. If you aren't already sitting in a doctor's office or in an emergency room, get to one immediately. This is the worst part for most kidney stone victims, even more painful than the eventual passing of the stone itself. Without the benefit of painkilling drugs such as Demerol, you'll feel a constant and radiating pain coming from your lower back and progressing through your abdomen. Many victims double over from the pain, or find very unusual positions that will ease their discomfort. Some find that lying on the floor is helpful, or sitting upside down in a chair. Once you have received a painkiller, however, the symptoms tend to become much more manageable.

So what should you expect from a course of treatment? Your first day in the hospital will be filled with urine tests and possible x-rays. The urine test will confirm the presence of blood, which will indicate a possible kidney blockage. The x-rays will pinpoint the location of the stones and their relative size. More than likely, you will be given intravenous fluids to restore your hydration level, and your diet will be restricted to non-dairy foods and non-caffeinated liquids. After a day or two of bedrest and fluids, your doctor will recommend several courses of action, depending on your individual test results. Many kidney stones are eliminated naturally, following a few days of increased fluid intake. The patient usually experiences an immediate feeling of relief as the stones, usually the size of tomato seeds, pass through the urinary tract. Others are not quite as fortunate. The doctor may advise the use of a sonic 'crushing' device that will blast the stones into manageable pieces. This treatment can leave you feeling as if you have been in a prize fight or two, but is relatively non-invasive. The final option could be surgery, where a catheter is introduced through the urethra and a hook device actually snares and removes the blockage physically. It is every bit as intrusive and exciting as it sounds. Rarely an open surgery is required to physically extract the stones through a small incision.

If all goes well, you should be back to normal within a week's time. Your doctor will advise you not to drink excessive amounts of sugary or caffeinated beverages, and reduce your calcium intake at night. You must remember to take more frequent water breaks at work, and avoid strenuous activity that could promote dehydration. Once you have had one kidney stone experience, you run a significant chance of having a few more in your lifetime. You must adhere to your doctor's advice religiously if you don't want a repeat performance of your first kidney stone attack.

Essiac Tea Side Effects and Warnings

Essiac is an herbal tea made up of  Burdock root, sheep sorrel and Indian rhubarb root. The tea may be purchased as dried herbs, or already brewed into tea, or extracted into tinctures, concoctions, or other liquid forms.
There is a belief among many people, that herbs must be better because they are natural. While I believe that natural can most definitely be better, we are wise to remember that many medicines have also come from plants, and that many plants are poisonous, or can cause some nasty side effects. Natural does not necessarily mean better. That is the most important reason that you should get any herbal remedies from a practitioner who understands the herbs and how they may affect people.
Essiac  tea plays an important role in strengthening the immune system and reducing the tumor size.  It also helps to purify and detoxify the blood. When you are fighting cancer, there are 2 important considerations. The first is that your immune system was designed to kill cancer cells. If you have cancer then your immune system has failed in some way. Second, most cancers are as a result, or aggravated by, the prolonged or acute exposure to foreign chemicals and toxins.  There are also other purported benefits like cell repair and restoring the lost energy levels to cancer to cancer victims.
Despite the known benefits, there are also potential side effects one must be aware of.
Gastro-intestinal side effects-  nausea and constipation are possible but rare. Diarrhea and vomiting may be occur at the beginning of treatment, however if this does happen, Rene Caisse would recommend that you take a break for a few days from taking it, and then resume at a lower dosage.
Blood sugar issues- Some people show a decrease or increase in blood sugar levels when consuming the tea at the therapeutic dosage. If you are a diabetic, you should start with a small amount and gradually increase the dosage, while monitoring your blood sugars, and adjusting insulin if needed. As a caution, you should never self medicate with herbs. Always consult a practitioner who knows your medical history.
Many people will experience frequent urination. This is a symptom of detoxification, and is a welcome sign that the herbs are working. Drink plenty of water to replace fluids lost, and flush out toxins.
Easiac may cause blemishes  for some people. This is another sign of detoxification and is often transient. Continue to consume your tea, and you will likely find that your complexion clears up and is more radiant than ever.
Cough and cold are normal detox symptoms experienced at the beginning of any detox program.. not just with this combination of herbs. Persevere if you can. Most of these signs are early detoxification results,  and subsequently will disappear.
Of particular note... you must not take Essiac if you are pregnant. Some of the herbs could trigger uterine contractions.
Also if you have kidney stones, or are prone to kidney stone, you may want to avoid using this tea. The oxalic acid in rhubarb could increase the risk of stones. This is a balance however, as one of the herbs is said to dissolve kidney stones, so it is likely that this caution is of little consequence.
Over-all, essiac tea is a natural remedy for cancer, skin conditions, detoxification and more, which may be consumed daily over a period of time with very little risk.
